JOSHUA VOGEL
Sculptor, furniture designer, and woodworker, and the co-founder of Black Creek Mercantile & Trading Co. (BCMT) based in Kingston, New York. Raised in 1970s New Mexico, his early years were shaped by extensive travels through Australia, Haiti, Europe, and the American West. He studied Anthropology and Art History at New Mexico State University before pursuing Architecture at the University of Oregon—where his deep connection to wood first took root.
In the mid-1990s, Vogel moved to New York City and established his first studio. There, he co-founded BDDW, a furniture and design company recognised for its heirloom-quality, American-made pieces. Eventually drawn to a quieter, more intentional way of life, he relocated to the Hudson Valley to reconnect with the fundamentals of design, sculpture, and craftsmanship.
Today, alongside his partner Kelly Zaneto, Vogel runs BCMT, a design and production studio known for its refined, hand-crafted work in solid wood and natural materials. Revered for his meticulous attention to detail and intuitive grasp of proportion and process, his work bridges traditional craft with sculptural sensibility.
Beyond furniture, Vogel maintains a personal artistic practice focused on sculpture and sculptural wall pieces. His work explores form, balance, and the quiet poetry of materials—drawing inspiration from philosophy, spirituality, and the rhythms of the natural world. Through the BCMT Gallery, he exhibits his pieces alongside those of like-minded artists, cultivating a dialogue between design, craft, and nature.
"Work inspires work. One idea leads to another—the love of making things and the desire to do better, to push ahead—excites me." — Joshua Vogel
