FABRIZIO BERTI
Italian artist known for his ironic and irreverent visual language, marked by the linear simplification of figures into striking, symbolic icons. His use of vivid, flat colours outlined with thick black lines draws clear influence from the Pop Art movement, while his passion for comics informs a unique and recognisable painting style.
Berti’s early works featured stylised characters caught in tragicomic, often surreal scenarios—chased by mouths symbolizing recurring dreams, or suspended in paradoxical encounters with death. Over time, his practice evolved toward reinterpreting historical and pop culture figures using a recurring, skeletal visual structure: a circular head, dot eyes, elongated oval nose, and minimal, slender bodies. These characters, though abstracted, remain recognizable through precisely rendered symbolic details—beards, uniforms, medals—executed with miniature-like accuracy.
A hallmark of Berti’s figures is their identical nose—a kind of visual signature—while mouths are notably absent, referencing earlier works in which they were expressions of fear and obsession. His portraits are not literal but rather decontextualized interpretations, stripped of ideology and transformed into modern icons or “tags.”
Though widely appreciated and collected privately, his work has also sparked critique and censorship, underscoring its provocative edge.
Fabrizio Berti lives and works in Torcegno (Trentino, Italy).
